Happy Paws

OVERVIEW

Happy Paws is an animal adoption app that allows you to find your companion, schedule meet and greets, fill adoption papers, and schedule your pick up all in one app.

This project was the final assignment for the Mobile & Web Design course at Berkeley Community College. In this standalone project, I took an idea and turned it into Happy Paws by learning what users wanted from an adaption app.

Project Takeaways

I was fortunate enough to be enrolled in a school that had a strong multimedia department. This project taught me a lot about UX design. I learned the importance of user testing, personas, and mapping.

In this course, I obtained the following skillsets:

  • Building Personas. I learned what a persona was and why it was important. Having a persona is like having a brand identity guide for a visual designer. You have all the information you need in one place that you can keep referring back to when you're working.

  • Researching. From research trends, reviews to speaking to potential users, I learned a great deal of why it's important to get users feedback before starting a project. After all, the app is for them!

User Persona

My research was based on competitors' user reviews and conducting a survey for potential users. I asked a group of people several questions about animal adaption. Would they prefer to adopt at a shelter or an app? What kind of things would they need to know about the animals they're interested in? etc. I found it valuable, in this case, to look at the reviews on the app store of competitors. I gained insight into what people wanted out of these apps, and I made sure my design listening to their requests.

Wireframes

With the research completed, I was ready to get the skeleton of the app sketched out. I sketched the vision I had for the app, including all of the information I knew the users needed and wanted.

Solving the Problem

P // The users requested additional clear photos of animals.

S // There is a size requirement for photos uploaded by the user putting the animals up for adoptions, this will prevent pixelated photos.

There is an option to click on the photo that will become a full screen, and the user can swipe through the other images. In addition, I added a 'see more photo' link.

P // Users were requesting to have the option to select multiple choices when they were searching for animals.

S //  I added the various options a soon-to-be owner would be looking for such as size, age, breed, traits, and more.

P // Users were requesting to have the option to select travel range.

S //  In addition to typing out the location, the user has the option to select the miles from their location they are willing to travel.
